Moving through the cycles of reality, I mostly acquired the materials on display through gifts from nature. I harvested these life sources by asking for permission and intuiting the appropriate response before proceeding. I gave gifts in kind to show gratitude. Co-creating with the more-than-human kin in our external landscape and in my studio over the past year has deepened my witnessing of “material entelechy,” a political philosophy Jane Bennett coined in Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things. This theory suggests that materials possess their own vitality and act as agents of change within our shared place.

Cattail paper holds the memory of wetland ecosystems that capitalism seeks to drain and develop. The great fluffy material used for nesting has also helped me create works that aim to deepen reciprocity with nature in our shared space. Wood retains the memory of its past shape, and continually seeks to rejoin its destined form. The pine wood used in this show was sourced from my grandfather. This work is an act of healing ancestral trauma – healing wounds created from white syncopation and hegemony. This work asks viewers to reflect on their role in systems that fragment wholeness, urging them to imagine a world where illumination comes through collective liberation rather than individual salvation.
